Lipoic Acid Supplements

Extreme Weight Loss Aided with Lipoic Acid Supplements

In a recent study conducted by researchers at Oregon State University, lipoic acid supplements were linked to weight loss in obese, but otherwise healthy patients.  The report, published in the Journal of Nutrition, analyzed a group of 31 people over 24 weeks with a daily supplement of 600 milligrams of lipoic acid, with an equal number of placebo groups.

Balz Frei, Director Emeritus of OSU’s Linus Pauling Institute stated “The data clearly showed a loss in body weight and body fat in people taking lipoic acid supplements. Particularly in women and in the heaviest participants.”

Lipoic acid is produced naturally in our body (in small amounts) and works at the cellular level to turn nutrients into energy.  It is also found in a variety of foods such as tomatoes, broccoli, spinach, and brussels sprouts.  However, lipoic acid can be tolerated in higher doses as a dietary supplement. It is a powerful antioxidant that may reduce inflammation, and skin aging, promote healthy nerve function, lower heart disease risk factors, and slow memory loss progression.

Scientists have studied the health-related benefits of lipoic acid for many years, but the studies have primarily focused on people with pre-existing conditions like diabetes, which made it difficult to see how it played a role in relatively healthy yet overweight people. It was also noted that previous studies used the S form of lipoic acid, which is produced by industrial synthesis and not the natural form.  This particular study only used the R form of lipoic acid – which is the form naturally produced in the body.  R lipoic acid is significantly more potent because the body recognizes it and knows how to use it.

Lipoic acid supplements can be costly, so maximizing the benefits with smaller amounts is something researchers will want to pursue.  Do not take lipoic acid supplements before consulting with your doctor, especially if you are taking thyroid medications.  Also, children, pregnant women, or nursing mothers should avoid lipoic acid supplements.
